LexiQ: The language partner you can really build on
If Sophie Vandooren and Bart Deweirdt were two intersecting circles, this would be the overlap: they both started out as junior subtitlers, climbed up to coordinating positions and, after many years of experience, were hungry for more: more professionalism, more quality and more passion. LexiQ was the logical result of their shared ambitions.
Word + quality = LexiQ
SOPHIE:
“I’ve been a language person ever since I was a kid. I read all of the languages on the cereal box, milk carton or whatever was on the table. After focussing on Modern Languages in high school, I went on to study Applied Linguistics in French, Italian and Greek. Did you know, actually, that ‘lexi’ is Greek for ‘word’? Add the Q for ‘quality’, and you get our company’s name, LexiQ.”
BART:
“I, too, was fascinated by subtitles from an early age. I thought it was cool that the subtitler’s name appeared on screen in a credit. I wanted to immortalise myself in a credit like that. Later, during a subtitling workshop, I was sure: this is going to be my profession.”
For people.
By people.
The two linguistic entrepreneurs have other common denominators (to put it in mathematical terms again). They are both kind-hearted family people who are dedicated and caring.
Sophie: “I’m caring by nature, and that shows clearly in my work. Taking care of all of the customers’ needs is part of our culture. We brainstorm with the customer and deliver reliable, professional advice throughout the entire process. But we also care for our employees and freelancers, by making proper agreements, giving feedback in a respectful way and putting our trust in them.”
Absolutely professional, and a little quirky, too
Bart: “Another thing we have in common is our sense of humour. There’s a reason my surname is Deweirdt, you know. Sorry, that joke just had to come out. Sometimes, we’re so quirky, we’re eccentrics all around… Around… Round… Ah, hence the circles mentioned above (laughs). No, seriously, professionalism with a dash of humour is our favourite approach to working together.”
